Will firms adopt new health and safety procedures following employee injury in Rochdale?

October 11th 14:47 Health and Safety

Business across the UK could be inspired to improve their health and safety records through facilities management following an incident in Rochdale.

Trafford Magistrates' Court was recently told of an incident which saw a labourer suffer multiple fractures after a two-tonne piece of machinery fell on him.

As a result of the incident, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) carried out an investigation and found that bolts used to hold the machine part to the forklift truck were not designed for such use.

As such, engineering firm Carter International was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £4,184 in costs for breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

HSE inspector David Norton said: "This was a really nasty incident and the worker is lucky to have escaped much more serious injury.

"It is vital that companies where workers routinely lift very heavy objects not only provide the right equipment, but also have proper processes in place and plan each job properly to prevent these types of incidents."
