Could firms using facilities management cut down on training costs by engaging with staff?

October 6th 15:17 Cost Management

Businesses using facilities management cost reduction processes could be among those interested in new advice regarding staff retention.

According to the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), money is no longer the key motivator when trying to retain workers.

The organisation said that flexible working and development opportunities are now more sought after.

Mike Petrook, a spokesperson for the CMI, said that organisation should to realise that simply offering pay rises is not always the best solution.

"Given the current climate, it's time that businesses grew up a little bit; they cannot think – and indeed many don't, now – that it is OK to reward people with pay rise after pay rise," he said.

Mr Petrook claimed it is "critical" that businesses learn to engage with staff rather than thinking that money is the answer to all problems.

"What employers must do is concentrate on building remuneration packages that incorporate the earnings – the take-home pay – with things like development opportunities and flexible approaches to work."
