UK businesses could be encouraged to improve their health and safety processes following the death of a worker in Salford.

John Cain was killed when a digger bucket struck him on the head while he was working on a demolition project in November 2004.

After an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) two individuals were prosecuted and subsequently fined.

Barry Godliman of Exford Drive in Breightmet and Robert Watson of Perrymead in Prestwich were fined £7,500 each and ordered to pay £2,000 each in costs after pleading guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

HSE inspector Stuart Kitchingman, said: "This case demonstrates how important it is for contractors to be aware of their health and safety duties, especially when there are several companies working on a project."

The incident also saw Windmill Demolition found guilty of the same offence and fined £15,000 with no costs.
