Will firms adopt cost reduction processes as BRS says high street woes not just down to economic downturn?

A number of UK businesses could be inspired to adopt facilities management cost reduction processes after one expert claimed the country's high street woes are not just down to the economic downturn.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has claimed that there are a number of factors affecting various town centres across the country aside from the current tough economic environment.

It follows the publication of a Local Data Company report which showed that the number of vacant commercial properties in the UK increased from 12 to 13 per cent in the first half of this year.

Stephen Robertson, BRC director-general, explained: "Many of the problems of town centres have more fundamental causes than simply the economic slowdown and they will not disappear just because recovery is underway.

"High street shops are often battling big bills for business rates and rents, parking and access difficulties, as well as failure to manage and invest in the area."
