Will businesses be inspired to adopt facilities management cost reduction processes as high street vacancies rise?

The number of vacant properties on the UK's high streets is on the rise, according to a new report.

This could inspire a number of retailers to adopt facilities management cost reduction processes as a way to maximise profits.

According to the latest report by the Local Data Company, vacancy rates on UK high streets increased from 12 per cent to 13 per cent between the end of 2009 and June this year.

Retailers based in the north of England are more likely to be affected by the downturn as just three of the worst 50 town centres - Bristol, Reading and Watford - were based in the south of the country.

Matthew Hopkinson, business development director at The Local Data Company, said: "The impact of the VAT increase, public sector cuts and fierce competition within the 'multi channel' retail environment make it increasingly hard for shops on our high streets.

"In light of these new and fast growing 'off the high street' channels, will we ever need these vacant shops again? For those that survive, service, quality of offer and price need to be their values in order to ensure they can thrive."
