A number of businesses in the UK could be encouraged to adopt facilities management in order to improve their health and safety process following an incident in Telford.
Sirane Ltd, a Telford-based packaging firm, has been fined by magistrates after a worker severed two fingers while operating an automatic guillotine at the company's premises.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that the company had identified the need to improve its safety guards some four months before the incident.
For contravening Regulation 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 the company was fined £6,000 and ordered to pay £2,083 in costs.
Katharine Walker, an HSE inspector, said: "The company's risk assessment, carried out four months before the incident, had identified the need for improved guarding on this machine.
"However, the company failed to implement this and knowingly allowed the machine to be used with inadequate safeguards."
