Will the 'burden' of auto-enrolment lead to a rise in the use of facilities management?

A number of small businesses operating in the UK could be encouraged to adopt facilities management cost reduction processes in order to protect profit margins when new pension proposals are enforced.

The coalition government is currently finalising plans to introduce auto-enrolling of pension schemes from 2012.

However, the Association of Consulting Actuaries (ACA) has said the administrative burden could be too much for the UK's smaller firms.

A recently-published survey by the organisation has revealed significant support for smaller firms to be able to opt out of the proposals.

According to the ACA, 60 per cent of the survey's respondents believe firms employing fewer than five people should be exempt from the plans.

ACA chairman Stuart Southall said: "Whilst the full cost of auto-enrolling all eligible employees will not hit most organisations until 2017, it is only right that the costs of auto-enrolment, including the administrative challenges, are addressed and tested as soon as possible."
