Will firms using facilities management be boosted by new HMRC approach

August 27th 15:18 Cost Management

Businesses using facilities management cost reduction process could be among those pleased to hear about a change of direction at HM Revenue & Customs.

The department has claimed that it is to change its tact when dealing with small firms.

In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Dave Harnett, permanent secretary of tax, said HMRC will no employ a "less combative approach to resolving tax disputes with businesses".

It has also been claimed that sole traders could be about to benefit as the new approach could lead to a reduction in the number of "long, drawn-out" IR35 cases.

Dave Chaplin, chief executive officer of advice website ContractorCalculator, said: "This move could signal the taxman focusing more on those contractors clearly within IR35, rather than trying to make case law with more complex, expensive litigation.

"So it remains as important to be IR35-aware as it has ever been."

The coalition's new Office of Tax Simplification is currently carrying out a wide review of the small business tax system in the UK.
