Will businesses using facilities management cope with job losses from public sector?

August 10th 12:10 Cost Management

UK businesses using facilities management cost reduction processes could be among those expected to increase their recruitment amid public sector redundancies.

However, one expert has claimed the private sector is not equipped to deal with the amount of people who will be looking for work after the government introduced further spending cuts.

Dr Paul Sisson, research fellow at the Institute of Employment Studies said that if cuts are "strong and quick" after the October spending review, then private sector employers will be unable to "absorb" all of those left out of work.

"More people in the public sector will find that they are made redundant and it won't just be a case of vacancies declining," he said.

"If that is done quickly it seems quite unlikely that private sector growth would be sufficient to compensate for that."

The comments come despite the latest KPMG and Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development report showing that private sector employers expect to increase their hiring activity over the next three months.
