More understanding could improve access to lending for facilities management firms

Facilities management firms could benefit from a more trustful relationship with banks, it has been suggested.

According to Andrew Cave, head of policy at the Federation of Small Businesses, it is the deterioration of the relationship between lenders and businesses that is restricting the latter's access to finance.

He argues that, because of this, firms do not have the confidence to go out and bid for contracts that they might otherwise have competed for.

"Coming out of the recession there isn't that understanding and that relationship that will take the level of confidence through to taking that risk," he said.

"Instead of banging on to the banks about access to finance, what we need them to do is return to that older model of actually helping and working with small businesses."

His comments follow a recent letter from the British Bankers Association to chancellor George Osborne setting out proposals to examine the barriers preventing banks from lending more to small businesses.ADNFCR-2717-ID-800026137-ADNFCR
