How will Time to Train scheme affect firms using facilities management?

August 13th 16:09 Cost Management

Business using facilities management cost reduction processes could be among those to be affected by the government's Time to Train scheme.

Currently the initiative allows employees of firms with a workforce in excess of 250 to request time off for training and study purposes.

However, from next year, the scheme will apply to workers in all firms, regardless of size.

While this will lead to an increase in staff skill levels, one expert has warned that companies may notice a number of employees start to look for "better jobs".

Sylvia Constantine, IBA Start up Business Adviser of the Year 2005, said: "I always believe that training is an absolute imperative to all businesses. It's as important for the owner-managers as it is for the employees. Every business will get some benefit from having a highly trained and skilled workforce.

"In smaller businesses the logistics of getting people trained, and the fear of people then leaving is a very real concern. There are pluses and minuses."
