Will UK retailers use facilities management during the 'calm before the storm'?

July 15th 16:36 Cost Management

UK retailers could be encouraged to adopt facilities management cost reduction processes following recent comments from the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

According to the organisation, the retail industry in the UK is currently facing the "calm before the storm".

The BRC explained that the measures introduced in the emergency Budget, such as an increase in VAT, have yet to be felt by consumers.

It follows the publication of a Barclaycard report, which showed that spending on credit and debit cards was 9.9 per cent higher last month than in June 2009.

However, the BRC has said a rise in card spending does not mean consumers are parting with more money.

Richard Dodd, a spokesperson for the BRC, said: "People heard the Budget last month and know that some really tough measures are coming in terms of the VAT increase at the start of next year and also cuts in public sector spending and public sector employment.

"The effects of those measures have not yet been felt. So I think consumer confidence will take a serious knock once the impact of that is actually felt, but for the moment spending has not been hugely affected."
