Will report findings inspire firms adopting cost reduction processes to improve their communication?

Good communication skills are the key driving force behind the country's most successful small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), according to a new report.

A recently-published survey by YouGov found that 50 per cent of the UK's "Super SMEs" cite their communication skills as the reason behind their success.

This could encourage a number of firms currently using facilities management cost reduction processes to concentrate on their firm's communication systems.

The study, which was commissioned by Orange, also found that having a good grasp of technology, being "well connected" and being environmentally aware were also key elements of success.

Martin Lyne, a marketing director at Everything Everywhere, said: "Whether based in a rural hamlet or a major city, it's clear that high flying [firms] and more importantly, the entrepreneur who established them, share key characteristics.

"Presence on social networking sites for example now provides start-ups with access to new contacts, new ways of thinking and new customers, which formally would have been difficult to attain."
