Will Manchester incident inspire use of facilities management health and safety processes?

July 15th 16:38 Health and Safety

A number of businesses operating in the UK could be encouraged to adopt facilities management health and safety processes following a recent incident in Manchester.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has revealed that three men in the area have been fined a total of £5,000 after a worker fell eight metres to the ground while working on a barn roof.

Trafford Magistrates Court was told how David Pass was left partially-blind in one eye and in a coma for several days after the fall.

An investigation by HSE revealed that no scaffolding or protection has been supplied by Adrian Evens, Andrew Oliver and John Long at the barn in Sale.

The men were fined £2,000, £2,000 and £1,000 respectively after pleading guilty to breaches of the Health and Safety at Work act 1974.

Ian Betley, a construction inspector for HSE in Greater Manchester, said: "This case should act as a warning to construction companies about the dangers their employees and contractors face when they carry out work at height.

"Otherwise workers will continue to be injured or even killed."
