Will data loss report encourage firms using facilities management to train up their staff?

July 21st 14:47 Cost Management

A number of UK retailers currently adopting facilities management cost reduction processes could be encouraged to increase their staff training efforts following the findings of a new report.

Recently-published research by data recovery specialist Kroll Ontrack has revealed that the majority of data losses are the result of human error.

According to the study, which focussed on home, business and government IT users, 40 per cent of people believe human error to be the "leading cause" of data losses.

The report comes weeks after the Information Commissioner's Office announced new powers to fine companies up to £500,000 for losses of sensitive data, such as credit and debit card details.

Robert Winter, chief engineer of Ontrack Data Recovery at Kroll Ontrack, said: "While technology and technology aptitude continue to improve year over year, the reality is that hardware failures, as well as human errors, continue to be factors.

"No one factor can ever truly be overcome, making data loss a reality. Consequently, it is not a matter of if, but rather a matter of when."
