Somerset construction firm fined over worker injury

The importance of having adequate facilities management provisions in place has been highlighted by the case of a Somerset firm who have been fined £10,000 by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after a worker's foot was crushed under a paving machine.
Alan Seviour, who was working for John Wainwright and Co Ltd as a delivery driver at the time of the incident, had to have his lower leg amputated after his foot became trapped and crushed between a bar at the front of a machine and a speed bump.
HSE inspector Annette Walker said: "Mr Seviour suffered life-changing injuries because the machine was in motion and the driver had limited forward visibility because of the way the machine was designed."
The Radstock-based company pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2 (1) and Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and was ordered to pay £8, 015 in costs, as well as the £10,000 fine.
