HSE launches offshore site inspection

July 29th 13:54 Health and Safety

Businesses working in the UK offshore energy sector could potentially look to make use of facilities management solutions as government inspectors launch a new health and safety initiative.

With around half of all existing oil and gas fixed offshore platforms around the British coast due to have exceeded their initial design life within the next few years, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has announced the launch of a new inspection programme.

The initiative will see such instillations checked and their operators reminded of the need to take ageing into consideration when ensuring the wellbeing of their workers.

It will look at the structural integrity and the effectiveness of fire and electrical control systems on the offshore platforms, thereby again highlighting the need for effective facilities management health and safety systems.

"We will be seeking evidence and reassurance that operators are properly considering ageing and life extension as a key and distinct part of their asset integrity management plans," commented the HSE's head of offshore safety, Steve Walker.

Earlier in the month, the HSE launched a new programme offering safety advice for industrial firms operating in Southampton.
