Business collaboration standards to benefit facilities management

July 28th 14:32 Cost Management

A voluntary British Standard has been developed to support collaborative business partnering, which could benefit facilities management.

With the involvement of industry professionals and the government, the BS11000 enables an organisation of any size and sector to manage valuable business relationships and apply good partnering practice.

However, Martin Pickard, managing director of the Facilities Management Guru Consultancy has said while the new standard is "perfectly logical" for those in the industry, the nature of facilities management means it often requires a different style of leadership.

He told FM World: "There is a danger that the standard will get a spin away from the more face-to-face way of collaborative working that FMs do.

"This requires a different style of management for such a collaborative situation where your supplier is in your face every day."

The new standard – which is has been developed from the Publicly Available Specification PAS 11000 – is expected to be available in the last quarter of 2010.
