Will cost of sick employees lead to a rise in facilities management popularity?

British businesses are losing £2.5 billion each year on sick days that are not genuine, it has been claimed.

A recently-published report by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) revealed that 15 per cent of illness absences, around 27 million days, are not down to genuine illness.

According to the study, employees took 180 million days off last year, an average of 6.4 each.

The number of sick days means UK employers face costs of £16.8 billion as well as reductions in customer service.

Katja Hall, CBI director of employment policy, said: "The rate of employee absence has come down, but it still costs the economy billions of pounds a year. If absence levels across the board could be reduced by ten per cent, the economy would see annual savings of just under £1.7 billion.

"Unfortunately, bogus sick days remain a problem, and are unfair on hard-working colleagues and employers alike."
