Will carbon monoxide death inspire use of facilities management health and safety processes?

June 8th 15:59 Health and Safety

A number of British businesses could be inspired to adopt facilities management health and safety processes after a man died of carbon monoxide poisoning at a construction site in Scotland.

The death has resulted in Glasgow-based security firm Alpha Group Security being fined £7,000 by Hamilton Sheriff Court for breaching Sections 2(1), 2 and 33 (a) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that security guard Thomas Fraser died after the firm failed to issue him with the proper instruction on how to operate a portable power generator.

HSE inspector Adrian Tinson said: "This tragic incident should never have happened. It is the clear duty of those who create risks to manage them and to implement safe systems of work.

"This means clear instructions should be provided to contractors and operators and checks made to ensure they understand them."
