Stop. Collaborate and Listen.

June 18th 11:05 Cost Management
Procurement

Probably the wisest lyrics of Vanilla Ice. Certainly wiser than "To the extreme I rock a mic like a vandal, Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle" (?!). I did have to look this up. I'm not that sad.

The point I'm trying to make is that FM should be a more collaborative process with all stakeholders working together for the same aims. Is that too naieve and unrealistic?

Where the contractor works directly for the client there will usually be a fundamental conflict between contractors wanting to charge as much as they can get away with and clients wanting to pay as little as possible (for good work). Where contractors are managed by an FM provider this conflict shouldn't exist. Contractors will be encouraged by being rewarded for good work at a good price with the potential of more work from the FM providers other clients.

You'll find a prick in any bunch or roses and there will always be short-sighted contractors looking to make quick money by 'maximising' a job but they will quickly be found out and removed from the FM providers list of accredited contractors.

Those contractors that remain need to be part of the FM process. Their opinions should be sought and their voices heard instead of simply being dictated to by the FM provider. The best people who know how a contract is going is the Contractors themselves.

Sometimes we have to stop what we are doing, work with the contractors and be prepared to listen; but I'll leave the 'chump waxing' to Mr Ice.
