Could facilities management software help businesses manage their e-mail?

British businesses are failing to properly handle their e-mail correspondence.

This is the view of the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM), which said handling e-mails is not a "big ask" yet many enterprises are "still not getting a handle on e-mails".

Speaking at the AIIM Roadshow 2010, Doug Miles, the firm's UK managing director, questioned how many businesses are confident that e-mails are recorded, complete and retrievable within their company.

The expert said that businesses are still not confident even when they have a full enterprise content management system in place.

"I think we all take the blame for that to some extent, in terms of the fact that the industry as a whole hasn't quite got a handle yet on how best to deal with e-mails," he said.

"What is the one reason you need a strategy to manage information before it's too late? It's because without one your business is going to miss out big time."

It follows a recently-published report by computer and telecommunications research firm the Radicati Group, which showed that the number of hosted e-mail mailboxes in Europe, the Middle East and Africa will grow from 536 million mailboxes in 2010, to 641 million mailboxes by 2014.
