Private sector businesses that are using facilities management cost reduction processes could be among those to be interested in the findings of a recent poll.

According to the survey by interim management solutions provider Interim Partners, outsourcing functions to the private sector is the next government's best chance of cutting back its public sector spend.

Data from the report revealed that 29.7 per cent of interim executives feel this should be the main priority of whoever is in power when coalition government discussions come to an end.

The report also highlighted increasing investment in IT (21 per cent) and introducing tougher targets (20.6 per cent) as recommendations that those in power should consider.

Doug Baird, managing director of Interim Partners, said: "A lot of interims have spent the credit crunch implementing belt-tightening measures for businesses so they are definitely a constituency worth listening to.

"From their hands-on experience of implementing cost saving programmes across thousands of public and private sector organisations, interims say that the best way of balancing savings against service is through outsourcing."
