Could rising unemployment lead to increased use of facilities management?

Consumers are being urged to make spending cutbacks as the UK's unemployment rate continues to rise.

This could encourage a number of retailers to seek cost reduction assistance from a facilities management provider in order to offset any reduction in sales.

The comments were made by price comparison website uSwitch.com following the publication of the latest labour market report from the Office for National Statistics, which revealed that the number of unemployed people in the UK hit 2.51 million in the three months to March 2010.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said the situation looks set to become worse once public sector cuts are implemented by the new government.

"Taking second or third jobs to fund lifestyles is becoming increasingly difficult for a nation that already works the longest hours in Europe," she said.

"And with the new government planning to cut the deficit, it is highly possible that public sector jobs will be at risk. It really is time for consumers to batten down the hatches."
