Employees are becoming increasingly reliant on social media networks for professional purposes, according to one expert.

As such, businesses should think twice before completely blocking access to websites like Facebook, MySpace and YouTube, Spam Titan Technologies claimed.

The company, which provides spam and web filtering solutions, recently published a survey, which revealed that almost 77 per cent of small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) feel that web filtering is important.

However, almost 50 per cent of the survey's respondents said they do not currently have a filter in place.

Ronan Kavanagh, chief executive officer of SpamTitan Technologies, said: "This survey shows that economic pressures and the pace of change in working practices have left many SMBs struggling to balance the benefits and risks of Web 2.0.

"Evidently they understand the dangers and fully intend to protect themselves over time but this still leaves a significant window of opportunity for social networking attacks to leave key loggers and other types of malware on the network with potentially costly consequences."
