Could facilities management ease the effect of 'painful' spending cuts?

May 25th 16:03 Cost Management

Businesses using facilities management cost reduction processes could be among those to feel the "pain" of public sector spending cuts.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) said the £6.25 billion savings plan is "painful but necessary" if the new government is to be taken seriously in its plans to reduce the UK's deficit.

It follows the Treasury's detailed announcement of where the spending axe will fall, including an £863 million reduction in funding for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Richard Lambert, CBI director-general, said: "The measures announced by the chancellor, including departmental spending cuts and a civil service recruitment freeze, are painful but necessary steps to demonstrate the UK's seriousness about tackling the deficit.

"Just as private sector firms had to take strong action to cut costs during the recession, so too must the public sector."

Other cuts announced include £780 million at the Department for Communities and Local Government and £683 million at the Department for Transport.
