Could firms using facilities management benefit from tax leniency calls?

April 30th 16:22 Cost Management

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has called on the government to help small businesses stay afloat in the post-recession climate.

According to the organisation, small firms would have a better chance of survival if the government made it harder for HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to shut them down when they struggle to meet their tax obligations.

The comments could serve to encourage a number of businesses that currently using effective facilities management in order to reduce their operating costs.

FSB national chairman John Walker commented: "The FSB urges the next government to look at ways to help small firms stay afloat.

"This could be achieved by making it harder for HMRC to close small businesses down if they are late on tax payments, better access to affordable finance and credit and for government and big business to pay invoices on time to ensure a steady cash-flow in the small business community."

Mr Walker's concerns follow the revelation that £55 billion is owed to suppliers and creditors by 160,000 British firms.

According to the latest Red Flag report by recovery specialist Begbies Traynor, the same number of firms feel their financial problems are either "significant" or "critical".
