Could facilities management and smart meters offer businesses increased savings?

April 27th 14:34 Cost Management

Businesses in the UK that are attempting cost reduction through the use of an effective facilities management firm could be among those to be encouraged by recent comments regarding smart meters.

Andrew Gore, head of commercial and industrial at Siemens Metering Services, said such devices can offer firms savings that are "not to be sniffed at".

The comments follow the introduction of the government's Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), which came into effect at the beginning of this month.

Under the terms of the CRC, organisations are required to subscribe to a mandatory scheme to reduce their carbon emissions.

Mr Gore explained that by using a smart meter, businesses can reduce their carbon footprint and their energy bills.

"What really works well is when people's targets and rewards are built into the management information that is provided – if you manage your targets to drive performance," he said.

"We have seen customers, where they have been really focussed on the information that is provided, certainly save in excess of five per cent – which on a multi-million pound fuel spend is not to be sniffed at."

According to the expert, fuel typically accounts for between ten and 20 per cent of a medium-sized enterprise's expenditure.
