Construction sites failing safety checks, says HSE

April 7th 17:25 Health and Safety

Almost a quarter of the UK's construction sites failed to pass safety checks carried out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) last month, it has been revealed.

Newly-released data from the organisation, has revealed that 2,014 inspections resulted in 470 sited being issued 691 enforcement notices.

Effective facilities management could now be taken seriously on such sites after the inspections led to 359 developments being stopped immediately due to safety concerns.

Philip White, HSE's chief inspector for construction, said: "The fact that our inspectors needed to take enforcement action on almost a quarter of sites, and on a similar proportion of contractors, is a matter of serious concern.

"I want to make it clear to these operators that we will not hesitate to take action where standards of health and safety are endangering workers lives and livelihoods."

HSE statistics show that there were 11,264 injuries on Britain's construction sites in 2008-09, as well as 53 fatalities.
