Businesses should employ efficient invoicing practices

Business in the UK could minimise the likelihood of receiving late payments by ensuring their invoice processes are "clear and efficient".

This is the view of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) following the revelation that 71 per cent of smaller businesses are being paid late for goods and services from other organisations.

A recently-released study from NatWest revealed that the collective amount of unpaid bills over the last 12 months equated to £62.87 billion.

Steve Hughes, an economist at the BCC, said this could be reduced if businesses can make sure that their invoicing processes are in order.

"Businesses themselves need to make sure that they have a clear and efficient invoicing process, with clear and agreed terms of payment with those that they supply," he said.

"The government has [also] made attempts at addressing the problem, with faster payment of public sector bills and enhancing and promoting the Prompt Payment Code."
