Value of retail sales increases

March 26th 14:41 Cost Management

Businesses considering effective facilities management as a way to control costs could be among those interested in recent retail statistics.

Data from a recently-published Office for National Statistics (ONS) report revealed that the value of retail sales increased by 4.9 per cent between February 2009 and last month.

The research also revealed a clear divide in the performance of retailers in the food industry and those in other sectors.

According to the ONS, stores predominantly selling food products reported an annual increase of just 0.9 per cent.

By way of contrast, those dealing in non-food items experienced growth of 8.1 per cent.

Non-specialised stores appeared to be experiencing the highest value of sales with an increase of 9.1 per cent, while textiles, clothing and footwear retailers increased their sales by 6.5 per cent.

However, non-store retailers, such as online shopping websites, experienced growth much higher than that of their high-street counterparts, posting an annual increase of 21.2 per cent.
