'Thin clients' could save firms money

British businesses are being urged to switch to "thin client" computer systems in a bid to save money.

IT firm IGEL has highlighted the benefits of using such systems saying each unit could mean savings of £2,300 over three years.

IGEL marketing director Dr Frank Lampe said the systems are far more effective than standard sized PCs running off locally-installed software, or "fat clients".

"One major reason for the savings is the consolidation of the desktops, applications and data all on to one central server that can be administered more efficiently. Additional savings come from the thin clients themselves, which have fewer parts, last longer and use less power than comparable PCs," he explained.

According to IGEL, "thin clients" can offer businesses savings of up to £6,000 over the lifetime of the unit.

"Basically, the potential savings increase along with the number of workstations," he added.
