Slips cost Glasgow businesses 1,344 working days

Glasgow businesses, including retail outlets and factories, were unable to call on full staff numbers for 1,344 days in 2008-09 as a result of avoidable accidents.

The figures come from a newly-published report from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which also revealed that slip, trip and fall accidents in the city resulted in five deaths and 1,405 major injuries.

Dr Paul Stollard, director of HSE Scotland, used the figures to promote the department's new website, which shows how retailers like Sainsbury's have taken measures to reduce the number of in-store accidents.

According to the HSE, falls cost the British economy around £800 million last year.

Dr Stollard said: "These figures highlight the very real and serious nature of preventable slip, trip and fall incidents in the workplace.

"Making improvements need not cost the earth and we are encouraging people to visit our Shattered Lives website, where they will be able to get simple and cost-effective solutions to help manage these common hazards in their workplace."
