Rok reaps rewards from facilities management focus

A number of construction firms have rebranded themselves as facilities management companies during the economic downturn.

The measure has been taken as businesses in the building trade look towards the areas of the construction industry that have been less affected by the recession, the Financial Times reports.

Facilities management and support services have fared fairly well during the period of economic uncertainty, and this has been capitalised on by one company in particular.

Pre-tax profits at Rok, which calls itself as The Nation's Local Builder, nearly tripled over the course of last year as the business concentrated on the repair and maintenance sectors.

Chief executive Garvis Snook told the newspaper: "In the good times, throughout the centuries, people have built monuments to their success.

"This is not one of those times, but the existing monuments still need to be maintained and we are increasingly focused on this type of non-discretionary work."

Rok recently secured an extension to its framework agreement with Newlon Housing Trust after it completed maintenance on 1,500 residential properties in the London borough of Hackney.
