Businesses with a large workforce on minimum wage could be encouraged to seek the help of facilities management providers following an announcement in yesterday's (March 24th) Budget.

Effective facilities management could help a number of businesses with cost reduction after the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills confirmed that the wage will rise from £5.80 per hour to £5.93 from October 1st.

This 2.2 per cent increase will apply to workers aged 21-years and over, while those aged between 18 and 20 years will see their rate rise from £4.83 to £4.92.

Andrew Large, chief executive of the Cleaning and Support Services Association, claimed the move could also see a number of firms cutting down on the amount of hours they allow cleaners to work.

Mr Large told industry publication FM World: "It will undoubtedly lead to a reduction in working hours as clients ask contractors to keep cleaning budgets within headline figures."
