HSE to clamp down on dangerous construction practices

British construction firms could be encouraged to look into effective facilities management for their projects following the launch of a new initiative from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
The department has announced details of a new campaign aimed at "stopping dangerous practices on building sites across Great Britain".
As part of the initiative the HSE plans to increase the number of unannounced inspection visits it carries out of building sites where refurbishment work on roof tops is taking place.
Philip White, the HSE's chief inspector of construction, said: "Each year too many construction workers are needlessly injured or killed while working on site.
"While some sectors of the industry have made real improvements in recent years, we are really concerned about standards in the refurbishment sector, particularly on small projects."
HSE data has revealed that more than 270 prohibition notices were issued to 2,145 contractors in 2009 as a result of dangerous work practices.
