Businesses in the UK that are running their operations on a tighter budget in the post-recession climate could benefit from providing better support for workers with back pain, it has been suggested.

A new report has revealed that musculoskeletal disorders cost the country's economy 10.8 million days of work in 2008-09.

The Work Foundation has urged employers to make alterations to the workplace to enable those with back issues to remain at work.

Steve Bevan, the organisation's managing director, said: "The most important thing is good quality jobs which allow autonomy, control, discretion, a 'say' in key decisions, employment security and felt-fairness about the way they [employees] are managed."

He added: "The employer – with help from the GP and/or occupational health professional – should be thinking about how the worker can be kept at work, even if it means making temporary changes to the job they do or reducing their working time."
