March 4th 14:48 Health and Safety

Shattered Lives, the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) campaign to prevent workplace slip, trip and fall accidents, has been backed by staff and students at Darlington College.

The educational establishment has introduced viewing bays to allow visitors to watch workshops in complete safety as well as a range of other safety precautions throughout the college's new £35 million campus.

According to the HSE, last year saw 2,000 slips and trips in the north-east education sector, which resulted in one death and more than 1,000 major injuries.

David Cole, HSE principal inspector for the north-east, said: "It's great that Darlington College is backing the campaign and is helping its employees and students understand and control the potential for slips, trips and falls to happen.

"Making improvements doesn't need to cost the earth and we are encouraging people to visit the Shattered Lives website, where they will be able to get simple and cost effective solutions to help manage slips, trips and falls hazards in their workplace."
