HSE warns construction students about industry dangers

Manchester-based construction firms could be among those to benefit from new advice after the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) issued students in the area with tips on how to stay safe.
The guidance comes after the HSE revealed that accidents with the industry have claimed 17 lives over the past five years in Manchester alone.
Bill Dixon, HSE construction inspector in the north-west, said: "It is simply unacceptable that, on average, three construction workers are killed and hundreds more are seriously injured in Greater Manchester every year.
"We'll continue to offer guidance to those already in the industry but we also need to make sure those entering it stay safe."
The HSE has also arranged for leading safety specialists to meet with students at Salford University in a further attempt to reiterate the importance of health and safety compliance in the construction sector.
HSE figures have also revealed that there were more than 11,000 serious injuries in the British construction industry in 2008-09.
