Green Grid: Attitude shifting toward green IT

February 25th 14:38 Cost Management

Companies in the UK are becoming increasingly aware of the financial and environmental benefits of energy-efficient IT systems.

This is the view of The Green Grid, a global consortium of IT companies and professionals, which said there has recently been a shift in attitudes toward green IT practices.

Harkeeret Singh, vice chair of the organisation's EMEA technical group, said: "Would there have been a global head of sustainable technology six years ago in a major company?

"There's been a shift. Companies are recognising that."

Mr Singh, who also heads up the energy optimisation department at Thomson Reuters, explained that there are methods available to firms to calculate the efficiency of their IT infrastructure, such as PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) metrics.

"The metric was simple, easy to use and told you the efficiency of your infrastructure and how to increase the efficiency. It's getting traction as a global metric," he explained.
