Firms to concentrate on software upgrades

February 18th 16:21 Cost Management

Businesses are looking to reduce the costs involved with improving their IT systems as they negotiate the post recession recovery period, it has been suggested.

Figures from a new report from independent research firm Forrester have revealed that more than half of enterprises plan to upgrade their "industry-specific" systems rather than acquire new ones.

According to Forrester, the decision has been forced upon many firms as the effects of the recession have left a "backlog" in the upgrades IT decision makers had planned over the past few months.

Data from the study also revealed that 41 per cent of enterprises plan to upgrade, rather than replace, their finance and accounting software.

Dr Holger Kisker, Forrester senior analyst, said: "Despite all the hype around new technologies that hit the market in the past few years, firms are devoting most of their IT spending on already-installed technologies.

"As long as businesses are prioritising cost cutting and efficiency improvements, tech vendors must provide clearer business justifications for their offerings and demonstrate the functional fit with business requirements that their solutions provide."
