Factory fall highlights need for safety compliance

February 8th 15:39 Health and Safety

The need to comply with health and safety regulations has been highlighted after a factory worker fell two metres onto a concrete floor.

Bottle manufacturer Allied Glass Containers, was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay a further £3,173 costs after pleading guilty to breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Leeds magistrates heard that the manufacturing firm failed to ensure the safety of its workers after a gap in a mezzanine floor was created in order for maintenance work to be carried out.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Paul Yeadon said: "Somebody could easily have died here. This incident was completely preventable with a simple risk assessment and a bit of common sense in planning the job.

"Allied Glass has lost a valued, experienced employee, who is still recovering from his injuries. He should never have been allowed to fall."

Allied Glass Containers pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the act following prosecution from the HSE.
