Businesses using social networking websites for marketing and promotion purposes have highlighted a need for effective facilities management of their software.

A recent report by antivirus organisation Sophos has revealed that a number of firms believe the networking community could leave their enterprises exposed to online security threats.

Of the major networking sites, Facebook was perceived to pose the biggest danger, with 60 per cent of respondents identifying the site as their biggest social network worry.

However, writing on the company's blog, Sophos's Graham Cluley explained that Facebook was more likely to be perceived in that way given the amount of users it has.

"We shouldn't forget, of course, that Facebook is by far the largest social network - and you'll find more bad apples in the biggest orchard," he said.

Other websites identified by businesses as potential threats included MySpace (18 per cent), Twitter (17 per cent) and LinkedIn with four per cent.
