Expert issues password advice

February 5th 15:52 Cost Management

Businesses and individuals who use the internet to conduct their operations have been advised to make sure their passwords are hard to crack.

The advice follows news that a number of accounts have been hacked into after fraudsters discovered a number of people are using the same username and passport details to log in to various websites.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at antivirus firm Sophos, has now issued some guidance on how to select a complex password which is easy to remember.

The expert said using the first letter of each word from an easy to remember phrase is a good way to choose a password.

As an example, he said a phrase such as, "Fred and Wilma sat down for a dinner of eggs and ham", could create the password F+Wsd4adoe&h, which would be difficult for hackers to guess.

The expert said internet users who use dictionary words or team names for passwords on multiple websites are effectively offering hackers a "skeleton key" to their personal information.
