Businesses in the UK could be among those to benefit from using torrent technology to make their online update services more efficient.

The file sharing technology, which is often used to download music and images, is now being used by social media network Twitter for data management purposes.

Twitter recently announced that its updates would now be issued using BitTorrent.

Commenting on the news, founder and editor-in-chief of TorrentFreak.com, Ernesto Van Der Sar, said: "Twitter is a big name, but it's certainly not the first major brand to use BitTorrent."

"EA games has also used BitTorrent to distribute software and NASA has been using it for a long time as well."

Mr Van Der Sar encouraged more firms to use BitTorrent, describing it as a "great technology"

"Instead of downloading from one central server, which has a limited bandwidth capacity, everyone assists in distributing the file. This greatly improves the distribution speeds," he explained.
