Bakery fined over worker's fall

February 17th 09:39 Health and Safety

The need for businesses to fully access the risks involved in working at height has been highlighted by another workplace fall.

Tregoes Waffle Bakery, which is based in west Wales, has been fined £1,750 following an incident which saw an employee sustain a broken rib, bruising and a cut leg after a four foot fall.

Llanelli Magistrates fined the company after hearing how the worker's fall could have been longer had she not landed on a container, which was being stored below where she was working.

Following the prosecution by the Health and Safety Executive, Scott McKinnon, an inspector at the organisation, said: "The employee was exposed to unnecessary risk as there was nothing to stop her falling.

"Many serious - and sometimes fatal - injures are caused by falls from distances below head height."

In addition to the fine, the company was ordered to pay £1,374 in court costs after pleading guilty to breaching section 6(3) of the Work at Height regulations 2005.
