Recycling firms offered new safety guidance

January 21st 13:54 Health and Safety

The importance role effective facilities management can play in health and safety compliance is to be highlighted by new guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Companies working in the waste and recycling industry are to receive the guidance after the government department revealed the sector suffers nines times more fatalities than the national average.

Speaking at the first of several events, Judith Hackitt, HSE chair, said: "Waste and recycling is a sector which is experiencing considerable growth as we all strive to do more to respond to environmental challenges.

"This makes it doubly important that we take action to respond to the fact that the number of accidents in this sector continues to be high, despite recent improvements, one of the keys to further progress is getting the client/contractor relationships working well."

HSE said confusion surrounding legal duties, and the inaccurate belief among some local authorities that contracting work out relieves them of their health and safety responsibilities, could be a contributing factor to the high injury rate.
