More firms to advertise on social media networks

The increasing popularity of social media networks will eventually drive advertisers online, it has been suggested.

Guy Phillipson, chief executive of the Internet Advertising Buruea, said websites such as Facebook are getting so popular they are going to become "inescapable" for advertisers.

"So much of our time spent online [is] within social [networking] and that's going to be inescapable for advertisers," he said.

"In the end you need to follow an audience and find out what they do all day to decide where you are going to advertise."

The comment follows news that following the success of its US launch, The Nielsen Company is to release a product in the UK which allows firms to measure the effects of their online advertising.

Mr Phillipson said the move could lead to other networks pursuing advertising and said Twitter, which currently carries no adverts, will "probably" do so in the future.
