HSE to launch vehicle spot checks

January 21st 13:53 Health and Safety

Haulage companies in the UK could be among those to be affected by a new round of vehicle spot checks planned by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The department has launched a new load safety campaign to ensure that vehicle loads are being transported as securely and safely as possible.

Peter Brown from the HSE said: "There is absolutely no excuse for unsafe loads. We hear from drivers that they were only 'going down the road' or 'they were running late' but these just won't wash, not when people's health or lives are at risk."

The safety expert warned that unsafe or unsecured loads could cause a vehicle to overturn.

According to the HSE, more than 1,200 injuries and millions of pounds worth of damage are caused every year by unsafe loads.

Hundreds of random spot checks are now expected to take place over the next few weeks.

The checks will target drivers in the north-west of England over an eight day period.
