Healthcare facilities management cost to rise due to parking consultation?

January 4th 17:35 Cost Management

The cost of facilities management in the healthcare sector could be set to rise as a result of a new consultation regarding hospital car parking charges.

Launched by the Department of Health, it outlines a number of options, such as giving free parking to outpatients that will have regular appointments at the hospital.

According to FM World, some hospitals have argued that charging for parking is necessary in order to ensure facilities management funding is available to maintain car parks.

If parking is made free or prices are reduced, it many mean that money has to be diverted from elsewhere in order to ensure sites are kept in good condition.

Health secretary Andy Burnham explained that the aim of the consultation is to create a "fairer and more consistent approach to parking".

"At the moment charging practice varies greatly and the public have no clear sense of the principles beneath it," he explained.

A poll by Macmillan Cancer Research recently found that 80 per cent of people want the move introduced in England for patients with long-term conditions.ADNFCR-2717-ID-19538613-ADNFCR
